Managing Physician-Industry Relationships and conflict of interest dilemmas

Wherever you turn these days for news, there is another article that highlights the complex professional relationships between physicians and life sciences industry. Typically, the news focuses on the outlier cases and they generate a high interest due to the importance of healthcare to society and because of the many perceived and real conflicts of interest.

This is, however, not a new phenomenon. A news archive search on the topic revealed more than 35,000 articles published between 1980 and 2009. Interestingly, the annual volume of articles has remained nearly stable between 1999 and 2009. What certainly has accelerated since 2008 is that many stricter laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines for our industry and physicians have been adopted in the US and the European Union.

Jan Heybroek published an overview article in the February 2009 copy of the Regulatory Affairs Journal that reviews the latest guidelines and offers suggestions on how to adopt a ‘best-in-class’ approach in your organization.
